In the good old days of internet marketing, just about 9-10 years ago, meta keywords were a good way of telling Google and the other search engines what to find on a given website.
Back then, this was the only thing the search engines focussed on and it was therefore quite easy to get a good ranking on many competitive keywords and frases.
This is no longer the case!
The Google of today scans your content, your titles, and your descriptions to get an overview of what your pages are all about. This basically means that the need for Meta keywords is passé, and that you shouldn’t waste any time on them at all. Actually, if anything they give your competitors information about what you are trying to rank for, and this is information best kept to yourself. Meta keywords have NO significance for SEO at all.
Technical SEO is the term for the work you do to optimize your technical platform. The technical platform is the foundation of your rankings in the search engine results, and it is crucial that you avoid making mistakes here. Technical issues WILL affect a website’s ability to rank in the search engines.
The term Technical SEO covers many different tasks, but their common goal is to improve and optimize your website’s ability to rank in Google’s and other search engines. I will elaborate a bit more on proper technical SEO:
Indexing: Good and correct indexing is the first step in any SEO setup. If a page isn’t indexed, it can’t rank in the search engines, and if it isn’t in the search engines, it basically doesn’t exist- at least not for the search engines, which is where people go to look for content.
Duplicate Content: Another issue can be duplicate content. Duplicate content is when the same page, with identical content, can be found on more than one URL. This can be indexing of category pages, list pages, PDF pages, tag pages, and print pages, that are integrated in many CMS systems as default.
These functions can be useful for your readers, but they can be harmful to you in the search engines. Luckily these problems can be solved, and it is possible to optimize your site for SEO and still have a user friendly website. User friendliness is also an important part of SEO.
But duplicate content is a huge problem, and one of the technical barriers on your site that you MUST take care of. Google wants unique content and they won’t show multiple version of the same thing, since the user only needs one version. To remove duplicate content, you obviously need to know where to find it, and there are some obvious places to search.
The Domain: The website’s domain is the primary access point, and this is what points and leads to the website itself and the files within. In relations to the search engines, a domain must only answer to one specific adress. Additional adresses must point to the correct one. This, to ensure that the search engine robots always land on the version that you want as the primary one.
Domain issues can lead to massive problems concerning duplicate content. If the domain answers with www, and without it, you have two different websites, including subdomains and subpages. This is also the case with https, http, and so on.
Be mindful of the technical aspects of your SEO, it can spell the difference between success and failure online. If you don’t know how to deal with it yourself, you should definitely get help from someone who does.
