You see, more and more people are using the internet and the companies have realized that. They know that if they don’t take advantage of this, they will be leaving a lot of money on the table. And with affiliate marketing it is basically a win-win situation for the seller as well as the producer, since no money is changing hands, unless a sale is made.

As an affiliate you can decide for yourself how many hours you work as you get paid by the sales you make. This means that you are pretty much in control of how much money you earn. IF you know what you’re doing!

And the company that owns the product doesn’t lose any money, since they don’t have to pay you anything unless you make sales.

It is a very simple concept: Whenever a costumer buys something through your affiliate link, you get paid a percentage of the money the customer spends.

What makes it even easier, is that you don’t even have to be in direct contact with the company who’s product you’re promoting. There are affiliate “networks” where you can choose between hundreds of  companies and products you want to promote, and these networks take care of all administrational tasks, so you and the company don’t have to.


So Exactly What Is Affiliate Marketing?

The first thing you need, if you want success as an affiliate marketer, is to know about those involved in this whole affiliate marketing thing:

There are essentially four factors:

  1. There is you – In this case you are “the affiliate”
  2. The company – The party who wants to promote/sell a product.
  3. The Affiliate Network – Where you find companies and products to promote; administrates sales, payments, leads, etc.
  4. The consumer – Buys the product or service you are promoting.

Example:

A company wants to sell something, i.e. a telephone, and contacts an affiliate network in order to get people (affiliates) to market their product.

They then agree on the terms, and the network places an ad on their forum, saying that you can earn $2 if you can get visitors through their link to their website, and another $25 if they buy the product.

You (the affiliate) then see their ad and start promoting their product, using the special link you generate (the link is attached to your profile, so you get your commission every time it’s activated). You then place the ad on your website, blog, social media platform etc.

The consumer then clicks on your link to get to the ad, and you get $2.  He then buys the product, and you get another $25.

In other words: The company makes a sale, you get paid a commission for providing the costumer, and the costumer gets his new telephone and everyone’s happy.

Easy peasy, right?

Wrong! Obviously, if it was that easy EVERYBODY would be doing this.

Many try for years, without making a single sale, but read on and I will show you exactly what to do to find success in this business.


Types Of Affiliate Programs

There are basically two types of affiliate programs:

  1. PPS (Pay per sale) – An estimated 80% of all affiliate marketing is based on this model; the company pays the affiliate a certain amount or percentage of the price of the sale he generated through his link.
  2. PPA (Pay per action) – In this model the affiliate is usually paid for obtaining information about potential buyers for the company. The affiliate gets paid in smaller amounts than with PPS, but it is “easier” to get “customers” with PPA.

Ok, with this basic knowledge you are now ready to start working as an affiliate marketer. The most important thing now, is to stay motivated and target oriented.

Affiliate marketing can generate a LOT of money, but you need to be focussed and learn from people who have experience in doing this.

TRUST me on this one; it’s a long hard struggle to get success with this by trial and error. I’ve tried that and it’s a waste of time and money.

So how to get started:

  1. Find an affiliate network. It is an option to contact a company directly and apply for an affiliate program, but I would recommend that you get some experience first by using an affiliate network. The networks have lots of companies and products listed in one place, so it is easy for the affiliate to find what he is looking for.

I would recommend that you sign up for 2-5 different networks, so that you always have many different ads to choose from. It is mostly free to sign up and really easy to do.

You should never ever pay to be an affiliate. Some private vendors promise big commissions if you sign up for their programs for an initial price, but they are SCAMS and you usually end up paying much more than you earn. Stay clear of this type of programs!

Some legitimate networks I’ve used are:

  • Clickbank
  • Amazon.com
  • Ebay Partner Network
  • Rakuten Affiliate Network
  • Shareasale

2. Look for ads and pick the right one for you:

When you have signed up for an affiliate network, you will be able to see a marketplace with a lot of different ads that you can choose from. There are basically three factors to think of when you choose ads to promote.

  1. Do you have a blog or website – You should have a platform from which you can promote your product.
  2. Interest – You should always pick a niche that you are personally interested in. If you don’t, you will soon get fed up with creating content for your site.
  3. How much money can you make on the ad in question – Money is why you’re doing this, so think smart. Some products are expensive and therefore harder to sell. But if you earn ten times the amount of money per product sold, you only have to sell one instead of ten.

    3. Doing the groundwork

This is the hardest part, and the most time consuming. It is basically where you plan and build your campaign, and lay the foundation for your business.

When you have picked a product or ad, you should build a website, a blog, or something else where you can market your product.

Ok, so far so good, but the hard part isn’t over yet. This is where many wannabe affiliates fail and eventually give up.

SEO  (Search Engine Optimization) is what you do in order to get people to visit your site. It is basically what makes your website visible in the search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo.

No or bad SEO = no visitors = no sales = no money


Tracking: When you have your site setup for SEO, it is important that you keep tracks of the visitors and their behavior on your website. This makes it easier for you to optimize your site accordingly. By monitoring what is working and what is not, you can make improvements and increase your sales.

An Affiliate Network is a company that acts as a third party, or middle man, between the affiliate and the vendor. Another good thing about affiliate networks, is that they gather many vendors and affiliates on one platform. This makes it easier for all parties to find suitable business partners, than if they had to go out and look for them themselves.

So how does Affiliate Marketing work? What you do is use what’s called an affiliate link. An affiliate link is the hyperlink that connects the affiliate to the vendor. The link contains some unique ID’s that make it possible for the vendor, or the affiliate network, to see which one of their affiliates sent the traffic and created the potential sale.

The affiliate can choose to use a visible link, or he can hide the link in what is called an anker text, to make it look better. Like this:

It is also possible to use images in your content, and tie an affiliate link to the image itself. That way, when the visitor clicks on the image, he is sent directly to the vendor’s website.


The Affiliate Program

The Affiliate Program is the term used for the arrangement made by the vendor and the affiliate.

A program usually contains product images, graphic elements such as ads and banners, and information about the vendor, payment, rates, and certain guidelines.

For some time now, Google has put a lot of effort in monitoring and analyzing how the users behave, when they land on a website that they have found in their search engine. By doing this Google collects a lot of data that they, until just a few years ago, didn’t even look at. 

This means that Google can asses and rank a website and then test if it deserves the ranking it got, by monitoring the user’s behavior on the site. If it doesn’t, Google will degrade it, or even remove it entirely from their search engine results of a certain keyword or frase. That way they can make room for other websites that are a better match for that keyword search.

It is impossible to know exactly how much and what kind of data Google actually uses, but it is a fact that they do, and they will probably improve their methods even more in the future, as they get smarter and develop more monitoring tools. Ultimately, this means that user engagement optimization will be even more important in our SEO efforts in the years to come.

But where does Google get the user engagement data?

Google has access to much more data than you might imagine. We know for sure that they get user engagement data from Google Toolbar, Google Analytics, Chrome, and Google Adsense. Apart from those obvious ones we can mention tablets and Android phones.

What user engagement data is Google monitoring?

As I wrote earlier, it is impossible to know for certain what data they use. Only Google knows the answer to that, and they are, as usual, very secretive about their methods. The following list is more of a qualified guess, than actual facts. But these are what makes sense to me, in random order:

  • Bounce rate
  • Pageviews per user
  • Time spent on website
  • Pogo sticking
  • Actions on the site

How do we optimize our user engagement?

It can be easier said than done. You need some expertise in the programs and tools used to analyze the data, and you must know how to read and decode it. This is not something that a mere web statistics tool can do for you.

One thing you can do is to access your analyzing tool, and look at the high bounce rate, and try to find out why your users are leaving your page right away. There can be many reasons for this particular behavior; maybe your page doesn’t render correctly, some text may be missing, or maybe some images are “broken” – or maybe the quality of the content on your site just doesn’t live up to the user’s expectations or demands. In that case, you need to find out what isn’t good enough and modify it, or change it all together.

By using Google Analytics you can easily find out what the bounce rate is, and how much time, and how many pageviews per user. By analyzing these data you can find out what is working for you and what probably isn’t. You should then compare the good pages to the bad ones – by doing this you can sometimes figure out a thing or two that you can improve.


Local SEO

It doesn’t matter if you are running a local, national, or an international business, you still need to be visible in the local results. 

You know those local listings, where you can see those businesses closest to you. You list your business in the local listings in Google Places, it is easily set up and you can get results right away.

Links are important to Local SEO in order to get good rankings, but in this case you must focus on getting links from that specific local area that you wish to get rankings. This is done so Google can see that you actually belong in that specific area. You can also do Local SEO on your website, focusing on the on the cities and places where your users are situated.

The importance of reviews

One of the things that really affect rankings in the local Google Places Listings, is reviews. The more positive reviews you get, the higher your rankings in Google Places Listings. The results here show your location on a map and provide the users with the possibility of a direct phone link as well.

Social Meta Tags & Social SEO

If your efforts on social media are to have any effect, and attribute to your SEO work, it is important that your site is shown correctly on social media. If your social meta tags aren’t implemented it can lower your share rate significantly.

Badly optimized Webpages that aren’t tagged, appear empty, without images or supplementing text. This WILL affect the users that might want to look at an article. The chance of them clicking on it is low, and the chance of them sharing the content is even lower and you can forget all about getting any links from external sites.

You need to implement social META-tags from all the social media that are used in your business and by your target audience. You can find these META-tags on the various social media websites or as plugins if you are using Wordpress etc. The most popular META-tags are currently, in random order,  Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn, but it can be useful to add some more as well.


External, Or Off-Page SEO

External SEO is probably where you should focus most of your efforts, especially if you are in a competitive market. The following text is all about the external activities that are necessary in order to achieve good search engine rankings.

Linkbuilding: What actually made Google so popular, and the reason why they were able to offer the best search results, was their use of link analysis to asses the relevance of a given website. On the internet, most recommendations, be it a product or a service, are passed on through the sharing of links.

You could say, links are used like a ballot; the more links you get, the more popular and relevant your site must be. But it isn’t just the amount of links that is relevant. What kind of links you get, is also relevant, it all depends on the sender.

If the sender is credible and relevant in relations to your subject, then the link has a high value. If the link is coming from a popular and reliable site, it can pass some it’s popularity on to your site. There is therefore a big difference in getting a link from your uncle Henry, and getting a link from an authority in your niche.

When you are working with SEO, your are actually working on obtaining ingoing links. You can create some yourself, and others you can obtain by getting others to link to you, this is called linkbait, or you can contact website owners directly.

Link building is one of the most important areas in SEO, and it is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Link Profile: When you’re link building, you are working on improving your site’s current link profile. Google has become much better at analysing if a profile is natural, or if it is link manipulated, in order to get better rankings in their search results. Obviously, Google doesn’t like it if you manipulate your link profile to achieve rankings, and it is in direct conflict with their guidelines, so you should be careful.

However, it is not forbidden to get ingoing links to your website, and it is something everyone with a website should work on. A natural Link Profile would have many different kinds of links, i.e. from forums, blogs etc.

There should also be variations in the various kinds of links, links through redirect links, follow links and no-follow links, and others are what makes a healthy and natural link profile, and this is what you want to have, when you are working with SEO. NO major website only has links from one single source. Google knows this and they are keeping a watchful eye on it.

If your link profile doesn’t appear natural, the chances of getting good rankings are non existent. If this is the case for you, you should clean up your profile before trying to build or obtain more links.


Social SEO

Social media is a very important part of SEO, and it should be a part of every SEO-strategy. In 2011 Google introduced Google+ and since then they have added Search Plus Your World, that appears as an integration of Google+ in Googles search results. Using Search Plus Your World, you can influence the search results for everyone that you are connected to on Google+.

Other social media, like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter are also important, and you should be present on all these platforms, networking and using them to your advantage. It takes great effort to use, and control, the social media in relation to business, but it can provide some good and unique results with regards to traffic to your website and branding, and it sends some very good signals to search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, who use these in their analysis.

It’s not irrelevant how you categorize your content. You need to make sure that the search engine robots can find their way, when inside your website, and that they prioritize your content in the right hierarchical order.

You should always focus on sorting your content in a good and clear hierarchical order, this could be compared with a good old fashioned file cabinet. If the content in your file cabinet isn’t sorted according to subject, name, etc. it can be hard to find the documents you’re looking for, and the same can be said about your website. So make it a priority to arrange your website properly. This will help the robots index your content, and thus improve your chances of a better ranking.

You do not want the search engine to decide what is important and what is not – that is your job! Even though the search engines have evolved and improved a lot, they still aren’t intelligent beings like us, and they need help to make the right decisions.

If you let it be up to the search engine to decide for you, it will be nearly impossible to reach the optimal SEO results.

In order to get good rankings in the search engines, it isn’t enough to just have well organized and good looking website. It has to be fast as well.

If you have a big website without many incoming links and slow response times, it will be practically impossible for Google to crawl though it all.

Tests have also shown that if a site takes longer than 5 seconds to load, more than 50% of all users will leave it again. Google is monitoring this user behavior and it affects the score for your website. So by improving the loading speed on your website, you give the user a much better experience and chances are they will spend more time on your site. If the users spend much time on your site, it is a clear indication to Google that your site is efficient and relevant and that users find it interesting, and this will help you get a better ranking.


Pagespeed Insights

Google’s speed estimating tool is called Pagespeed Insights. This is what grades your website, and it does so according to some predefined criteria. This could be compression of pictures, scripts, files and joining of css files etc. All elements that can improve your website’s loading speed.


Pingdom Tools

There is a great, free tool called Pingdom Tools that you can use to test your website. It gives a very accurate loading graph of all your website, so it is easy for you to see which elements on your site have the longest loading time. You get data that you can act on directly. Pingdom Tools also gives you the overall loading time of your website.

A good website should get a score over 90.

In the good old days of internet marketing, just about 9-10 years ago, meta keywords were a good way of telling Google and the other search engines what to find on a given website.

Back then, this was the only thing the search engines focussed on and it was therefore quite easy to get a good ranking on many competitive keywords and frases.

This is no longer the case!

The Google of today scans your content, your titles, and your descriptions to get an overview of what your pages are all about. This basically means that the need for Meta keywords is passé, and that you shouldn’t waste any time on them at all. Actually, if anything they give your competitors information about what you are trying to rank for, and this is information best kept to yourself. Meta keywords have NO significance for SEO at all.


Technical SEO


Technical SEO is the term for the work you do to optimize your technical platform. The technical platform is the foundation of your rankings in the search engine results, and it is crucial that you avoid making mistakes here. Technical issues WILL affect a website’s ability to rank in the search engines.

The term Technical SEO covers many different tasks, but their common goal is to improve and optimize your website’s ability to rank in Google’s and other search engines. I will elaborate a bit more on proper technical SEO:

Indexing: Good and correct indexing is the first step in any SEO setup. If a page isn’t indexed, it can’t rank in the search engines, and if it isn’t in the search engines, it basically doesn’t exist- at least not for the search engines, which is where people go to look for content.

Every published page or post on a website should therefore be indexed. Needless to say, this doesn’t count for the pages that you choose not to index, like the privacy policy. But, if all your pages aren’t indexed, this might be because of errors in the technical setup or maybe lacking or missing internal links. Google crawles and indexes a website based on the number of internal links it has. The more links a website has pointing at itself, the more patience it gets, and the deeper the Googlebot will crawl the website. There can however be issues that make it hard or even impossible for Googlebot to index the site.

Duplicate Content: Another issue can be duplicate content. Duplicate content is when the same page, with identical content, can be found on more than one URL. This can be indexing of category pages, list pages, PDF pages, tag pages, and print pages, that are integrated in many CMS systems as default.

These functions can be useful for your readers, but they can be harmful to you in the search engines. Luckily these problems can be solved, and it is possible to optimize your site for SEO and still have a user friendly website. User friendliness is also an important part of SEO.

But duplicate content is a huge problem, and one of the technical barriers on your  site that you MUST take care of. Google wants unique content and they won’t show multiple version of the same thing, since the user only needs one version. To remove duplicate content, you obviously need to know where to find it, and there are some obvious places to search.

The Domain: The website’s domain is the primary access point, and this is what points and leads to the website itself and the files within. In relations to the search engines, a domain must only answer to one specific adress. Additional adresses must point to the correct one. This, to ensure that the search engine robots always land on the version that you want as the primary one.

Domain issues can lead to massive problems concerning duplicate content. If the domain answers with www, and without it, you have two different websites, including subdomains and subpages. This is also the case with https, http, and so on.

The search engine results are ever changing, and the last couple of years, we have seen more of universal results, as images and video are integrated in the search results.


This gives you better chances of being seen in the search results and you can stand out amongst your competitors. Tests have shown that the users are more likely to click on links with video and images than ordinary text based search engine results. So, if it is possible you should always try to implement images and/or video in your SEO work.


Images And Tags

Google and other search engines aren’t very good at decoding images. Although Google has made big improvements on their image recognition software there is still a long way to go. This means that we need to help the search engines, so that they can be better at understanding what is on our images, and why they are there. There are basically two ways of doing this, the most effective one being the use of alt-tags.

An alt-tag is an alternative tag that was originally used to explain to Google what is in an image, so that people with bad eyesight should be able to decode it. Tags are also important to Google, and this means that you should mind how you use them, so that you can get even better results.

The other way is by using the title-tag. Those two are totally different, as the alt-tag describes what’s on the image, while the title-tag is only there to tell the names of what’s on the image.

Using alt-tags and title-tags, is a more effective way of telling Google what the images are about and what they show, and increase the relevance of a certain site. By optimizing the images there is a much bigger chance of a high ranking in Google’s image search.

So always remember to focus on your image tags and titles, they can spell the difference of succes and failure, if done right. Often times, when people implement an image in their posts, they just hurry on, without tagging them first and this is a huge mistake, as far as SEO goes.

Meta Descriptions

A website’s meta description is basically a summary of the content of your website, for both Google and other search engines.


Whereas your title is your headline, the meta description is a supplementing text that explains what your user can expect to find on your website. You should be mindful of what you write in your meta description is the first part of your websites that the customer reads.

But Google doesn’t always use your meta description, if a user has written a keyword or frase inside your website Google might choose to highlight that, since the user is better covered and has a better chance of finding what he is looking for. This will provide more clicks, and Google is very good at picking the right solutions, when necessary. But, obviously this all depends on your site’s ranking.

Keywords inside descriptions

It has no significance whatsoever for your ranking, if you choose to use your keywords in your descriptions, however it might get more visitors to your site, since the keyword is highlighted if it is in their keyword search. So pick your meta description keywords wisely.

If you are ranked 4th or 5th in Google, having the right keywords can actually give you more clicks than those ranked above you in the search engine, so picking the right keywords can be extremely profitable.

Here are some basic guidelines you can follow in order to improve your meta descriptions.

  1. Date:   Having the date in your meta description is a waste of text and it is seldom relevant to your user.
  2. Letters:   Try to make your meta description short. If you use more than 156 letters, Google will shorten it.
  3. Phone number for smart phone users.   If you put your phone number in your meta description, it will be possible for a potential customer to call you just by clicking the link in your meta description. This might be a good idea, since it can be time consuming and tiresome to navigate a website, only using an Iphone or smartphone.
  4. Do not “keyword stuff” your description:   Again, meta descriptions have no direct influence on your rankings, so don’t keyword stuff your descriptions, it might lead to fewer clicks.
  5. Use your primary keyword in your description.    This will be highlighted and may attract some attention.
  6. Use your description as a marketing text.    No matter if it’s a service, information, or a physical product you’re offering, you should always try to get buyers.  See your description as a sales text.
  7. Use CTA:    You should use CTA (Call To Action) in your descriptions to entice your customers to act on your offer. It may seem simple, but it actually works.
  8. Do NOT make promises you can’t keep!    Although you want to sell your message, don’t make promises you can’t keep. It leads to a bad user experience and in most cases the user will go back to the search page they came from. This is something you should worry about, because Google sees this as a sign that your content isn’t relevant to the specific keyword or frase the user wrote in the search engine.
  9. Look at your competitor’s descriptions:    Try to make your description different from the other’s.
  10. Test your keywords:    Use Google webmaster tools to monitor your CTR. Try to make changes in your descriptions and look for the best results.
  11. Be unique:    Google can deem your content duplicate, based solely on your meta descriptions. Do your best to be unique, also in your meta descriptions.
